the threat of a flood is very real out here on the rez. its interesting the reactions we get from folks. some say to us: don't be silly, there won't be a flood. this is usually, not always, but usually from folks who live on higher ground. then my friend heard a comment last week from woman who was responding to a concern that we folks out here would lose all our stuff because insurance doesn't cover floods. her response: well, its their own fault then for living out there. and still others say to us: well, its only stuff....
the trailer park we live in has a very diverse demographic. we have young families who, because the housing market in town is so outrageous, can only afford to buy a trailer in order to own a home. they don't have a hope of buying a house in Mission. this was their only option. we also have some elderly folks who are on their own. if either one of these groups were to lose their 'stuff' they would hardpressed to replace it. it would be just too expensive.
so, there is a sense of urgency to be prepared and start moving our 'stuff' out.
we are grateful for the handful of people who have offered their services to us. i am especially concerned for the elderly who aren't able to get packed up or don't have a place to go.
of course, we all pray that we are not flooded out. but in the meantime we are doing our best to get everyone taken care of.
